We are celebrating 50 years of Folkwear with a series of sewing contests all year. We have been quite busy here at Folkwear over the last few weeks (and will stay that way for a few more), so we are late getting this month's contest announced. But, we are excited to do so because one of my favorite things about Folkwear patterns is that so many of them have options for embroidery or handwork. Embroidery and handwork has been a way of decorating clothes, and providing symbolic meaning to clothes, for millennia.
For this contest, here are the rules:
You can see a few examples of our patterns with embellishment details in them below.

I am so delighted you are keeping the art of hand made clothing alive, especially now that creative handwork is more and more done electronically with synthetic materials. I am retired after almost 30 years as an Art Therapist, ATM,ATR. The healing power of making useful creations by hand has always amazed me and sometimes left me without a dry eye. I will soon be 90 and was around when your patterns first came out. They brought the beauty and appreciation of other cultures into my world and they had a profound effect on me. Growing up, my mother had little money and always bought my clothes. I began drawing whole wardrobes and my art teacher in high school had me apply for a scholarship to Parson’s School of Design in N.Y., which I won. What you are doing is very much needed today, as I’m sure you know, and I am so very grateful you were and are out there.
