Fabric Suggestions for 138 Child's Australian Drover's Coat

by Victoria Watkins

Folkwear has a variety of children's patterns, but I think the 138 Child's Australian Drover's Coat may be the most practical for everyday wear. While the miniaturized riding coat is definitely an impressive re-creation of the adult's pattern, the finished result doesn't feel as costume-y or fanciful as some of the other offerings in our children's catalogue. Every kid needs a good winter coat, and this pattern can provide a practical base for home sewists to keep the little ones in their lives warm and dry.

I am personally a fan of wool for its warm quality that doesn't tend to be as stifling as synthetics. For this reason, my first suggestion is a deep brown melton wool from Hart's Fabrics. The listing notes that it is a lighter weight, which may make it easier to sew and style for the smaller child's coat.

Folkwear also has a wool melton in stock. The soft and felted texture would make for a sharp coat, while the black would match more outfits and occasions than something less neutral.

If you've read any of my other fabric suggestion blogs, you may have picked up on the fact that I'm a major fan of a playful and loud pattern. Kid's clothing is a great place to use fun and vibrant patterns, and the balloons on this cotton laminate from Hart's are no exception. This water-resistant fabric is well-suited for making a fun raincoat.

Another great raincoat staple fabric is nylon. This off-white nylon ripstop fabric from Hart's is a classic raincoat material that would be light enough to wear as an overcoat to protect from the elements.

Last, Mood Fabrics has this cute black and white plaid wool coating available. I think I may have chosen it because it reminds me a bit of a coat I got as a preteen, right at the time where I was beginning to invest more interest in fashion. I could see it being a similar piece for today's growing girl: a little more mature, but not boring.
