Fabric Suggestions for the 160 Hawaiian Mu'umu'u

Fabric Suggestions for the 160 Hawaiian Mu'umu'u

By Victoria Watkins

Our newest release, the 160 Hawaiian Mu'umu'u, is simultaneously feminine and freeing. Traditionally it is made with bold cotton prints, often of tropical and floral designs.  But you can also make your mu'umu'u with rayon (for a more drape-y look) or with silk, linen, or a brocade.  The options are quite large.  Today I'm going to share six ideas for fabrics that would make a fantastic mu'umu'u.

Aqua colored linen
First is this organic yarn-dyed linen in aqua. With its breezy loose fit, the mu'umu'u is a great summertime dress. Sewing with linen will add to the cooling effect.  Even though a solid fabric is not traditional for a mu'umu'u, it is a great option for this dress.

Cotton lawn with a colorful floral pattern

Sometimes when I write these blogs, I have to throw in a fabric that's entirely my taste. This bold cotton lawn in mumsie from Bolt Fabric Boutique is one such fabric. I love it so much that I'm seriously considering choosing it to make my own mu'umu'u.

Rayon poplin with green leaves, white flowers and blue flowers
For a more authentic dress, aloha print patterns are the way to go. Harts Fabric offers this tropical Mahaka rayon poplin; the drape of the rayon would look lovely sewn for this pattern.

For the most traditional options possible, there are sellers that specialize in Hawaiian print fabrics with hundreds of options. I love the pastels of this fruity cotton batik from hawaiianfabric.com.

Cotton with yellow and pink tropical flowers on a purple background
Another delightful option, this purple floral cotton comes from Hawaii Fabric Mart.

Blue cotton fabric with white flowers and blue leaves
Our last option also comes from Hawaii Fabric Mart. This blue and white floral print is gorgeous and looks a tiny bit retro. If you're looking for the perfect aloha print fabric, I recommend looking at these two sites and others. Both Hawaii Fabric Mart and Hawaiian Fabric have endless varieties of colors and designs to choose from.

Which fabric would you choose for your mu'umu'u?
