Norwegian Busserull Sewing Pattern — Traditional Folk Shirt
Sizes XS-3XL
Sew your own busserull — a classic Norwegian folk work shirt with timeless, clean lines and a relaxed, comfortable fit. Like traditional European smocks, the busserull is constructed from simple rectangles and squares that allow plenty of freedom of movement. This shirt includes underarm gussets for mobility, a buttoned front placket, and a distinctive, but optional, half-belt at the center back.
The busserull was traditionally sewn from striped cotton, though solid neutrals and plaids were also common. Around 1900, as Norway's national independence movement grew, rural folk clothing became a powerful symbol of Norwegian identity — much like the bunad. The busserull took on patriotic meaning and was often made in the red or blue of the Norwegian flag, paired with traditional white stripes.
Over time, the shirt evolved from everyday workwear into a popular choice for leisure, folk dance, and folk festivals. Originally a men's garment, the busserull is now worn by people of all genders.
Wear your busserull as a casual work shirt or a festive folk garment — the choice is yours. Sew it in plain linen for an understated everyday look, or choose traditional striped cotton for an authentic feel. This pattern works beautifully in a wide range of fabrics, making it as adaptable as it is elegant.
