Fabric Suggestions for 153 Siberian Parka

Fabric Suggestions for 153 Siberian Parka

This pattern makes a generously-sized pullover parka based on a smock worn in Western Siberia. Traditionally made of tanned leather, this pullover is equally wonderful in cozy fleece, sweatshirt material, or any warm outerwear fabric.

This is an easy-to-sew garment that is perfect to keep you warm in winter, and choosing your fabric for this project can be fun.  We have listed some fabric suggestions below that we think would be perfect to make a warm and cozy 153 Siberian Parka!

Suggested fabrics: Medium to heavyweight outerwear fabrics such as wool, sweatshirt jersey, or fleece.  You can use fabrics with some stretch for this pattern.  Just be sure to sew seams with a serger or zigzag stitch (at least 2 long and 1.5 wide).

PLEASE NOTE: Fabrics used as examples in blog may go out of stock from store.  If link is invalid for specific product, there may be another fabric from the supplier that you can substitute.  These suggestions are based on fabrics that are in stock at the time the blog post is written!

Here is a rich dark brown sweater knit coating from Michael Levine's collection.  A little reminiscent of the traditional leather look.

Below is a Sage Hemp Fleece made from hemp, organic cotton, and bamboo from Hart's Fabrics that we really liked.  Sounds so nice and sustainable!  And a suitable winter color!  They have a wonderful selection of cotton, bamboo, and hemp Sweatshirt Fleece in stock - in lots of colors.  You could even do a color-blocked Parka!

Harts also has this Bamboo Terry Knit, and I love a nice terry.  Since this one is part rayon, it would have a bit more drape than heavier knits, and is a bit lighter weight.

I love the classic look of herringbone!  Here is a 100% cotton French Terry Herringbone fabric from Stonemountain and Daughter.

Organic Cotton Plus always has great GOTS certified organic fleece and thick French Terry in many colors.  I like this cream fleece because it can be a canvas for embroidery, dying, or color-work/color-blocking, or adding piping.  Also great on its own!

That's all for now!  Happy Sewing!!
