Fabric Suggestions for the 220 Garden Party Dress

Fabric Suggestions for the 220 Garden Party Dress

by Victoria Watkins

It's time for another fabric suggestion blog, this time with our 220 Garden Party Dress. We offer this pattern as a PDF pattern, but we also have a few paper patterns in stock.  This pattern is fun because it offers opportunity for both historical and modern fabrics, so I'll share a selection of both.  In general, we suggest soft, sheer to lightweight fabrics such as cotton batiste, voile, lawn, gauze, or eyelet; rayon challis; silks; wool challis or blends.  Fabrics with edge embroidery or eyelet is also perfect for this dress!

Charcoal grey silk
The first suggestion is a charcoal grey China silk that we have in stock right now. The color, drape, and texture would work nicely for a more historical rendition.
Similarly, this yarn-dyed linen in a blushing pink recalls the gentle pastels of garden party paintings from the Edwardian era.  Also in stock at Folkwear.
Hart's Fabric is offering this lovely floral, yet modern, challis lawn. This would be perfect for a breezy, more modern, summer dress.

This fox-themed toile print lawn found at Bolt Fabric, while not historically accurate, still conveys a sort of antique feel. The specific hue of the blue reminds me of a classic willow china pattern.
Lastly, the two flanges on the bodice of the dress create a fantastic opportunity for the placement of details. One of our samples used the border embroidery of a bolt of fabric for these pieces. This blue embroidered border fabric from Denver Fabrics could make for an equally stunning effect!  Marcy Tilton also has a gorgeous soft print fabric with embroidered eyelet edge that would be really wonderful.
What fabric would you want to make this dress from?
