Fabric Suggestions for 102 French Cheesemaker's Smock

Fabric Suggestions for 102 French Cheesemaker's Smock

This roomy pullover style is traditional garb for cheesemakers in Roquefort, France, and a loose comfortable shirt for your everyday-wear. This shirt is also a popular choice for Medieval and Renaissance re-enactors. Sized for men and women, the easy-sew smock features shoulder yoke, simple narrow buttoned neckband, and optional underarm gussets.

Suggested fabrics: Crisp medium-weight fabrics such as gingham, broadcloth, muslin, silk, linen, lightweight corduroy. Traditional French smocks have small blue and white checks.

PLEASE NOTE: Fabrics used as examples in blog may go out of stock from store.  If link is invalid for specific product, there may be another fabric from the supplier that you can substitute.  These suggestions are based on fabrics that are in stock at the time the blog post is written!

Fabrics we love from a few of our favorite fabric stores are featured below!

Here is the fabric we have featured in our sample.  It's a white Mozart Linen from Stone Mountain and Daughter.  This fabric is naturally textured.

From Hart's Fabrics, we love this traditional blue and white check cotton shirting - perfect to make the traditional version of this shirt.

Or try this Essex Linen blend from Vogue Fabrics to incorporate the traditional blue and white with a modern touch.

If you are thinking ahead for the fall or cooler summer evenings, you should look at this lightweight Italian cotton seersucker corduroy at Mood Fabrics.

Italian Tan Cotton Corduroy

This natural silk noil gauze from Stone Mountain and Daughter Fabrics would also make a beautiful top with an easy drape. And, they have lots of colors to choose from.

We hope you find the perfect fabric for your French Cheesemaker's Smock.  I have to say, everyone I have seen wear this top has both looked and felt great.  The frequent comment has been, "Oh, I need one of these"!  After the photo shoot, our lovely model purchased the pattern to make one for herself.  That's always a good sign. We hope you enjoy it as much as we have!
